Time
Time is a cultural concept that influences how we act. While attitudes towards time can vary, reflecting on time as a resource can assist us in adapting our lifestyles to become more sustainable and responsible. How we use the hours we have at our disposition determines to a great extent what we prioritize each day. Time often affects where we live and work, how we chose to travel, what we select to eat or wear, and what technology we prefer to have. Time-lines control the production, distribution and consumption of many products in our highly interconnected, globalized world. But time is not only what happens in the moment. It includes what has occurred in the past and what might take place in the future.
The challenge we face is how to be able to analyze history and the present in order to forecast the future. Envisioning, or futures thinking, can help us consider how our actions can contribute to or detract from our vision of a sustainable lifestyle in the future.
